At Holmer Green First School and Pre-School we understand the importance of looking after our planet and being sustainable. We are committed to being an Eco School and are currently undertaking the Eco Schools Green Flag Award.
Our Eco Council meet every other Wednesday and is made up of two children from each class, the classes elect these children at the beginning of the academic year. As well as feeding back information from the Eco Council to their class, the Eco Warriors bring ideas and suggestions from their class friends to share at the meetings.
This year the Eco Council have been focussing on the following:
- Litter picking around the school grounds and local area.
- Adding flowers and wildflowers to our school grounds.
- Reducing the amount of energy the school uses by encouraging people to switch off the lights when the room is not in use.
- Introducing a compost bin to recycle the food waste around the school.
The school has had the opportunity to visit the local sensory gardens in the village and complete their bug hotels. The children have also created a wonderful piece of sensory art using recycled materials for the gardens.
Every Friday, children across the school participate in Forest School sessions. These wonderful sessions are held on our grounds and are delivered by Chiltern Forest School. Our children (and grown-ups) absolutely love Forest School! Click here for more information.
We actively encourage our children to recycle and have paper and plastic recycling bins around the school. We also have recycling bins for marigold gloves, spectacles and batteries.
The children grow fruit and vegetables in our allotment areas which are then used in our snack stations in the classrooms. This allows our children to experience growing fruit and vegetables and gives them knowledge about where food comes from.
